Jo Anne McKinney to Speak Thursday

Jo Anne McKinney, Co-founder and President of the Big Fun Box, will speak at Thursday’s meeting, December 9th.  The Big Fun Box is the beneficiary of Rotaract’s 2011 Black Tie and Blue Jeans Gala, and we’re very excited to raise funds to sponsor 1,000 Big Fun Boxes.

The Big Fun Boxes are filled with toys and games, and distributed to children in hospitals around the country.  For more information, visit the Big Fun Box website.

Erik Dellenback to Speak on 11/18

Erik Dellenback, VP of Marketing for the Gator Bowl Association will speak at the Rotaract meeting this Thursday, November 18th.  The Gator Bowl Association’s mission is to provide Northeast Florida with the very best in college athletics and related activities in order to maximize positive impact on the area’s economy, national image and community pride.

Please join us on Thursday to hear about the positive impact the Gator Bowl has on Jacksonville.  Rotaract meets at 6pm at the Haskell building at 111 Riverside.

Our next meeting will return to our regularly scheduled 2nd Thursday of the month, December 9th.

November Meeting Moved to 18th

Rotaract’s November meeting has been moved to the third Thursday of the month, November 18th.  There will not be a meeting on the 11th, or on Thanksgiving.

Daniel Gilham to Speak October 28th

Daniel Gilham will speak at the Rotaract meeting on Thursday, October 28th about the World Affairs Council of Jacksonville.  The World Affairs Council is a non-partisan, non-profit organization whose mission is: To promote understanding of the world and its people and to engage citizens of Northeast Florida in becoming better informed participants in the global community.

Daniel serves on the board of the Council, and is active in the Council’s Young Professionals Program

Supervisor of Elections to Speak October 14th

This week’s guest speaker is Jerry Holland, Supervisor of Elections for Duval County.  Supervisor Holland first took office in March of 2005 as the result of a special election and was re-elected for his first four-year term in March, 2007.  He will share interesting information about the Supervisor of Elections office and all of the services it provides to the citizens of Duval County.  He will also provide a nonpartisan overview of the six proposed constitutional amendments that will appear on the 2010 general election ballot.

This is a great opportunity to hear rare, first-hand insight on both the history and future of the elections process in Duval County, as well as across the State of Florida.   You won’t want to miss this informative discussion, just in time for what is sure to be a historical November election!

Diann Catlin to Speak September 23rd

Diann Catlin will be speaking at our next membership meeting on September 23rd, at 6pm in the Haskell building at 111 Riverside. Diann is a teacher of etiquette, and this Thursday she will speak on “Courting your Client: Winning your client’s heart using polished business etiquette!”

Diann recently published an etiquette book titled, “Whatever Happened to Nice,” and will have copies available for purchase at the meeting. “Whatever Happened to Nice” is a small etiquette book crammed with business and social etiquette, and includes many of her favorite stories.

Cheryl Grymes of Big Brothers Big Sisters to Speak at Thursday’s Meeting

Cheryl Grymes from Big Brothers Big Sisters will speak at Rotaract’s membership meeting this Thursday, July 22nd, as we gear up for our annual BBBS picnic on Saturday, August 7th. Join us as we hear from Cheryl about BBBS and prepare for the picnic!

Thursday’s meeting is at the Haskell building in Riverside at 6pm, and dinner at The Loop in San Marco will follow.

Annual Wine Tasting Event This Thursday

The Rotaract Club of Florida’s First Coast is pleased to invite you and your friends to its annual Wine Tasting on Thursday, June 24 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.. Come sample a variety of flavorful wines presented by Riverside Liquors while networking with members of this award winning club. For those not preferring wine, beer, soda, and bottled water will be provided with light snacks for all to enjoy. Afterwards, please join us for dinner, location to be determined. The wine tasting will be held at the Haskell Building located at 111 Riverside Ave, Jacksonville, FL 32202. Admittance to this networking social is free of charge, so come out and have a great time! Feel free to invite people you think would be interested in joining Rotaract!!

Black Tie, Blue Jeans gala selected as 2010 Rotary International outstanding project for US, Canada and Caribbean

The 2009 Black Tie, Blue Jeans Gala benefiting DLC Nurse and Learn received recognition for Rotary International’s 2009-2010 Rotaract outstanding projects for the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. Rotaract of Florida’s First Coast is one of seven Rotaract clubs internationally to receive the award.

2009-2010 Rotary International recognition of Rotaract outstanding projects recipients

• International: Rotaract Club of Manila (District 3810, Philippines) for “Response and Relief Program” (to collect and distribute relief supplies, provide medical assistance, and raise funds to rehabilitate two learning centers for residents of five communities affected by Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng in the region of Manila,
Philippines)

• Africa Districts: Rotaract Club of Quatre Bornes (District 9220, Mauritius) for “Let’s Change Their Future” (to provide bathing facilities and items, nutrition education, vitamin-rich foods, and school uniforms to 400 impoverished students at Serge Coutet Government School in Baie du Tombeau, Mauritius)

• Asia Pacific Districts: Rotaract Club of Chung Yuan (District 3520, Taiwan) for “Rotary Promises We Achieve” (to raise $10,000 in Taipei, Taiwan towards the global campaign to eradicate polio)

• Europe Districts: Rotaract Club of Izmir-Göztepe (District 2440, Turkey) for “Clean Sea Project” (to raise awareness of the need for and benefits of safe water and sanitation among 7,600 children in 47 primary schools in Izmir, Turkey)

• Latin America Districts: Rotaract Clubs of Puebla de los Ángelos, Puebla Centro Histórico, Puebla Industrial, and Chilpancingo de los Bravo (District 4180, Mexico) for “Centros Rotaract de Iniciación Technológica para Niños Indígenas (Rotaract Technology Centers for Indigenous Children)” (to provide four computer labs and remodel one school dormitory serving 300 indigenous youth in the region of Puebla, Mexico)

• South Asia Districts: Rotaract Club of Women’s Christian College (District 3230, India) for “Stree Suraksha” (to create awareness of domestic violence with the general public in Chennai, India)

• United States, Canada, and Caribbean Districts: Rotaract Club of Florida’s First Coast (District 6970, USA) for “Black Tie and Blue Jeans Gala” (to raise $22,000 for a school serving special needs children in Jacksonville, Florida)

The Rotaract Club of Florida's First Coast meets the second and fourth Thursdays of every month at 6 pm at Square One in San Marco. Every meeting features an outside speaker, meeting business, and usually dinner afterward at a local restaurant.

Even if you can't make the meetings, there are plenty of other opportunities to get involved. From after-work or weekend community service projects to fun outings, there is much to choose from in the Rotaract Club of Florida's First Coast.
